LOVING THE TEEN YEARS: WAYS TO SUCCESSFULLY CONNECT WITH YOUR TEENAGER

Aimee Rust, MS, LCPC, LMFT

Aimee is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has worked for over 20 years with clients in multiple settings. She has spent a large part of her career with children and teenagers and their families, addressing emotional and behavioral concerns, working toward increasing connection in their relationships, and improving emotional well-being. In addition to her professional work, Aimee is also a mother of 3 children, ages 18, 15, and 10.

Aimee's presentation was the first webinar in the 2022 Parent Empowerment Speaker Series. She guides parents in successfully engaging and connecting with their children. She addresses some of the barriers to connection during the teen years including peer influence, technology and social media, and a desire for independence. She provides tools to address these issues in ways that can lead to connection while still celebrating teens’ individuality. Above all, parents leave this session feeling hopeful about their relationships with their teens!

During her presentation, Aimee shares the following books:

Raising a Secure Child by Kent Hoffman, Glen Cooper, and Bert Powell

Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Mate'

Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain by Daniel Siegel

She also shared this poem by Gretchen Schmelzer. You can find more from Gretchen here.
